How I became a Well-Being Coach on Health, Life, Productivity, Transformation and Women Empowerment
For the past 22 years, I have been a doctor in China, a clinical researcher, and a pharmacist in Japan, then I moved to Australia in 2011 for my husband’s job. At that time I worked in Alfred hospital Melbourne as an honorable medical doctor researcher and at the same time working in a community pharmacy. In early 2016 with my 1-year-old son and pregnant with my daughter we returned to Japan to help with family-owned clinics and real estate, and in the summer of 2018, we moved to Washington, DC. for my husband’s research. During our stay in the US, I worked for NIH (National Institutes of Health), Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, Howard University-affiliated hospitals, well-known medical facilities such as INOVA, MedStar healthCare system, American circuit courts, and legal institutions as a Japanese/Chinese/English multilingual medical & legal interpreter.
It looks like quite a sound profile right, MD, PharmD, studied at top University, worked at top Medical organizations, facilities, indeed I have enjoyed and appreciated all my life experiences, but almost no one knows I had many lost and found experiences during all those years. Since my marriage in 1999, I have moved 17 times within 4 countries, and 11 cities for my husband’s career. On top of all this, I have 2 young kids to raise, and a workaholic husband to support in all circumstances.
As a medical professional, I did not have many chances to practice as a doctor, as a pharmacist, or stay longer with all positions, because of family reasons, cultures, regulations, licensing, visas, working permission, and all limitations that you could have imagined.
I certainly had a lot of ups and downs, emotional eating, addiction to dramas, low self-esteem, feelings of unworthiness, soul disorders that’s what I call all of them. I had been lost and felt depressed many times. As a medical doctor and a pharmacist, I understood there’s no medicine for my disorder. The vicious circle of life had drained my energies, and I was literally burnt out, even though it looked like I had everything that a woman could want – good education, jobs, husband, and family.
Somehow, I had always been seeking something strong enough to save me, and help me get out of struggling, fighting, fulfillment, and soul sickness. I struggled and fought with family, with the culture, with society. Yet each time I didn’t accept being down, weak, or depressed, I stood up for myself as I believed I had a strong mentality, and I was capable of masculine power.
But you know, that cost me a lot, not only mentally or physically, but with my relationships. I fought and fought to find myself, that’s one of the reasons I didn’t have kids until the 15th year of our marriage. That’s the year I started Thanksgiving every day, I have never felt so grateful after I had my first child. I gradually got my gratitude back. However, I was still looking for my value and worthiness, as my heart was not settled until I discovered online coaching and I had exciting breakthroughs.
I have never stopped self-growing; I have never given up seeking a higher version of myself as a human being. I knew I was strong as I had been through massive trials, I was a fighter with masculine power. But now it’s different from the old times. I’m no longer fighting that hard after I found and implemented tools, resources, skills, and laws, and unleashed my feminine power. I now acknowledge and recognize my self-value. I am centered, certain, and free more than at any other time in my life. I know I can reach what I aim for effortlessly, and with less resistance. I’m only sharing all of this with you to show you how unrecognizable my life is today from where it was when I first started down this road—and I know you can make this same kind of shift in your life, too.
We all understand there’s no definite but only infinite. I deeply understand growing is a lifetime process, there’s always another exciting level, space to improve, dreams to pursue. I feel it’s my destiny to share my synergistic knowledge, skills, experience, and feminine power through my coaching to help other women who are over settling for less and want a life that’s fulfilling, alive and amazing; women who are sick and tired of feeling anxious, stressed, burnt out, frustrated and just blah; smart women who are accomplished in many areas of their lives but know something’s missing; women who are stuck in their relationships, especially with their partner and wanting deeper intimacy and connection. I will help you to take your life back and own it and create the life you truly want!
How did you become interested in coaching?
Above is my story about becoming a well-being coach in all areas of life.
What was the moment when you realized that you were supposed to be a coach and help others achieve success?
As you can see from my story that I have been through a lot myself in my life, I understand the principle but I could have gotten the results I wanted years ago if I had someone there who could walk with me, bring me through the trial and come out with a better me; which could have shortened how much time of pain, freed up how much space for happiness to grow, and generated how much positive energy to achieve that I had dreamed about. That’s why I realize coaching and helping other people is my destiny, I can finally proudly say I can achieve the same dream of saving lives as a doctor, and now even better that as a coach can help with people’s souls which has proof and positive impacts on human’s physical and mental health, relationships, business, finance and many other areas without using the medicine. And that’s what I have always been doing to my patients, friends, and family, and they feel empowered, enlightened each time. I am so thrilled that I have discovered the power of coaching and I want to share with you to make this world a better place to live!
What is your favorite story about working with a client, and helping them have a breakthrough and get great results?
10 years ago, I had a hospitalized patient who was in his early 40th. Because of his high blood pressure, high cholesterol he could not get out of bed, and his body could not respond well to the medications. I went through his medical history and daily habits like drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco, I helped this patient with his nutrition & exercising plans, implementation of healthy habits, a list of conventional Chinese herbal teas, food that contribute to his condition, without using any complicated chemical compounds his condition had recovered over some time and went back to work as a breadwinner for his family; this is not the least, but he quit both alcohol and tobacco, dropped over 20kg of weight, installed healthy daily routines and healthy eating habits; and on top all those he even started educating other people, helping them to improve their situations. Don’t you think this is amazing? Is there anything happier than seeing your patient succeed?
What are the techniques or how you keep the outcomes that you help clients get in their lives that are tangible, measurable, and concrete?
Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives is a good way to plan the steps to meet the long-term goals for my clients. It helps take clients from ideas to action. Setting SMART objectives keeps the clients moving forward, helps with accountability and timing, and lets you know that you are accomplishing what you set out to accomplish.
I keep my clients accountable, I hold the safe space for them to stretch to exercise in specific areas on their needs to get the results they want, not only outside change which doesn’t last long but also build the deep “inner muscles” so that the results stick, it happens faster and permanently.
What are the outcomes that you help clients avoid in their lives, also tangible, measurable, and concrete?
I help my clients avoid procrastination, not taking action, and outside change only as it doesn’t last long.
On the other hand, I keep my clients accountable, I hold the safe space for them to stretch to exercise in specific areas on their needs to get the results they want, not only outside change which doesn’t last long but also build the deep “inner muscles” so that the results stick, it happens faster and permanently. I have always been helping my patients, co-workers, friends, and clients, and they feel empowered, enlightened by me, they get their Aha moments, always say ‘Wow’ during sessions or just in casual conversations, at the end of the session, my clients are always relaxed, relieved smiles on their faces, that’s the moment that I know they had breakthroughs. They believe I am an inspiring & empowering well-being coach!

Dr. Yuling Meng is a gorgeous mum of 2, who has gained vast medical & life experience from her travels around the world with her family. I greatly admire her tenacious spirit, as she delves deeply into one of her life passions of supporting women who are struggling to fit into the Japanese culture. I love the way she incorporates both inner & outer influences in her coaching and also how she encourages her clients to celebrate the small wins along their journeys towards their big visions. — C.H.
